Firstly, congratulations on the new family addition!
Losing baby weight is not easy but there are a few things you can focus on to help you on this journey. For some of us it is easier to loose the extra pounds and for some more difficult but the journey is quite similar. It all comes down to the basics – eat good food, exercise daily and take good care of your body. I know it’s easier to be said than done. I was able to lose all my pregnancy weight within a week of giving birth, due to a healthy lifestyle before falling pregnant and especially during the 10 pregnancy month. So here are my best tips that helped me lose all the baby weigh within 5 days after giving birth:
Eat more greens
I know you’re tired, I know you would rather eat a box of cookies but you got to get those greens in. After delivering a baby your body needs the best of the best food to recover, including lots of green vegetables. Try to eat at least one salad a day to get the nutrients your body craves for an easier and quicker recovery. Especially, for those who are breastfeeding, your body needs lots of good quality nutrients to create that golden milk for your little one. Of course, a bit of chocolate here and there is totally fine but make sure your meals are balanced with lots of fruits and veggies. Nothing better than a green juice!
Exercise every day, even if it’s just for 5 minutes while baby is doing tummy time next to you, or just 25 squats – whatever you can. But you got to move every day! Don’t pressure yourself on going to the gym every day, at first it’s enough if you start with 10-20 minute DAILY interval exercises at home, garage or the park. And you could try working out with your little one, check out this video I made with my 3 months old son!
It’s quite of a lifestyle change to have a baby and even more when you’re at home all day. Try to get outside every day for a short walk, the fresh air will benefit the mother and also for the baby. Put on your sneakers, baby carrier and head out to the park for a little walk. Fresh air will give you energy to keep going and will help the baby to sleep better (who doesn’t want that?).
Don’t pressure yourself about loosing weight. It takes up to 10 months to grow a baby and it can take double the time to lose it. Stop comparing yourself to other women out there and focus on your wellbeing. Some people may look skinny but are eating really unhealthy foods so put your mindset on nourishing your body with the highest quality foods and taking good care of yourself first. The weight will come off naturally if you focus more on nutrition rather than calories. Find healthy recipes here.
Read the labels
At the supermarket, always read the labels and check for the ingredients. If you see an ingredient that you are unable to pronounce, it’s better to leave it the package. Also, if the item has more than 7 ingredients, skip it. Try to cook more from scratch and limit the processed foods. I understand that, when you’re a mom the last thing you want to do is cook but I encourage you to cook larger meals in advance and freeze the leftovers. When you make dinner, cook more so you have leftover lunch for the next day. Or make a large pot of soup once a week. Cook once, eat twice.
Be aware of the little sneaky treats you’re enjoying throughout the day. Maybe it’s the chocolate cookie after lunch every day, or a side of potato chips, maybe some whipped cream on you daily Starbucks coffee. Try to swop the sneaky treats for some healthier options, like raw carrot sticks, 90% dark chocolate, nut mix or a chia pudding . Also, keeping serving size portions handy will help you limit the calorie intake and won’t let you finish the entire bag of chips before you even realize it.
